Traveling as a vegan can be difficult. Not knowing where to go to eat or even what you might be able to find can be tricky. Luckily, Royal Caribbean has made this a lot easier than many other travel options. The cruise was for the Western Caribbean on the giant Allure of the Seas. It was a 7 night cruise in October of 2021 from October 10th to October 17th. This was a great adventure that made me a fan of cruising for life.
Food/Main Dining Hall
The main dining hall has a daily vegan menu that is different every day that includes appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Notably, I remember getting a creamy tomato soup, sweet crème brûlée, crispy vegetable tempura, and savory glazed vegetables.
Ports of Call
The Allure of the Seas departed from Cape Canaveral in Orlando Florida. We stopped in Cozumel, Mexico; Costa Maya, Mexico; Nassau, Bahamas; and CoCo Cay, Bahamas, Royal Caribbean's private island. Days two and five where sailing days.
Shore Excursions
In Cozumel we did a three reef snorkeling adventure where a boat took us to three different reefs and it was spectacular. I was surrounded by fish at the first reef as soon as I jumped in the water! At Costa Maya we saw a Mayan pyramid which was incredible. It was insanely hot so after doing a quick tour of the pyramids there I jumped back on the bus to cool down. Thankfully the AC was rolling. In Nassau we took a harbor boat tour where we could see amazing buildings and celebrity mansions. The tour also included free rum punch which was delicious and one of the male leads for Mama Mia was on the tour with us getting a lot of attention from all the other tour goers. I believe we also stopped at a Mexican restaurant to get a bite to eat before getting back on the ship. Lastly, CoCo Cay was amazing. It was a hot day but we rented a day bed that was almost partially shaded by blankets but it also included rafts that allowed us to lay in the water and cool down. CoCo Cay has a great buffet area where we found some food and drinks. Our unlimited drink package also worked on the island so I had my fill of Bahama Mamas. I highly recommend the day bed. We did not check out the water park though.
Cruise Fun
I had a great time at Casino Royale, the onboard casino several times. Although I wouldn't have minded winning a bit more. The entertainment was also top shelf including having a production of Mama Mia which was quite the treat. There was also a performance on ice and a high diving performance at the Aqua Theater.
All in all, my first cruise was a great adventure. I was concerned about how I would eat enough not knowing how many vegan options I would have. One thing was for sure, I did not go hungry. I know that Royal Caribbean has just updated there menu now in 2023. I hope their vegan offerings are still as generous as before. I have since been on another cruise on Royal Caribbean's oasis of the seas, another oasis class which are currently the largest cruise ships in existence. I will be posting about that trip next!
